Somatic Ghosting

This isn't a standard presentation, not even by my standards:

1. The theme is almost non-existent, something always in the
background. There's a need to 'chase it down' - and 'it' is 
multiple, a conglomerate of micro-biomes - traces left everywhere.

2. There are examples which overlap/underlap - there's a kind of
persistence, a residue - the subject matters wanders, just out of
reach. (We watched the muskrats at early dawn, late dusk, saw them
from a distance, their features indistinct in the near-dark. Their
communication seemed based on touch, more than anything else.) It's
like that - a theme that crosses digital media, analog worlds, 
body issues, uncanny imagings within the 'idiotic real' -

3. A theme of bodies always as ghosts, some examples -

a. I'm walking down the street, engrossed in my cellphone, 
I'm staring at it looking down, concentrated, my vision 
and attention narrowly focused on the screen.

b. Trump's splatter semiotics - tweets produced at high-speed,
traditional news media unable to keep up - literally at a loss -
his broken discourse dominating analysis - as if the media were
unaware of the ghost in the room -

c. Gray Barker in 1950s West Virginia invents the 'men in black'
meme, creates fake flying saucers, 'flies' and photographs them -
at the same time collecting images he half believes in - at the 
same time turning the 'men in black' into pornographic memes -
"Gray Barker (May 2, 1925  December 6, 1984)[1] was an American
writer best known for his books about UFOs and other paranormal
phenomena. His 1956 book They Knew Too Much About Flying Saucers
introduced the notion of the Men in Black to UFO folklore. Recent

d. The ontology of images is no longer among 'real,' 'analog,' 
'digital,' 'fake,' 'authentic,' etc. - but is on the 
order of a miasma of representations - what changed all this is
the ability to alter a single pixel of an image without altering
any other - the 'crackling' of the digital image - and what
changed all this are the modes of transmission themselves - from
tcp/ip through blockchain through the imminence of the alterity
of the other through the skeins of satellites and other modes
of information transmission.

e. Serres' parasite has invaded content; becomes content; _is_
content; every observation is simultaneously noise and broken,
disseminated information.

f. The marks which characterize the body now characterize only
its carapace, its striations. The body exists as data-base
insertions, with a troubling horizon of the somatic - flesh, 
blank time, care.

g. Among the hyper-collapse of resources, the politics of desire
becomes the desires of politics; the presence of bodies translates
into flows; the other face of real deprivations transforms into
genocidal collapse; and the faces of strongmen, increasingly
evident, dominate through violent and fictional totalizations.

h. The sky is the mirror of the strong, the silent violence of
ecological collapse.

i. The faces we see are our own: i.e. digital tagging, and no 
longer our own: i.e. alexa: the flows of material and economic
goods (blockchain, traditional finance, intelligence) depend
less and less 'on us,' much less our 'good will'; this is all 
debris, 

j. absorbed and disseminated by the dynamics of the single pixel
and the chaotic absorption and degradation of the image/imaginary
itself.

k. The image absorbs its imaginary; the imaginary absorbs its image:
somatic ghostings.

Beginning of the emanated text on somatic ghosting -

There are a number of anomalies in the pieces created in MacGrid
and the OpenSim localhost (virtual world on my computer). The
Suicide piece is one I've discussed before - the appearance of a
virtual object that was unexpected. The other piece possesses an
object which is an "emanation" - produced by the software itself -
of another base object; the emanation is distorted. I think of
these as the production of objects, bodies, in space that are
neither the result of "real body" production elsewhere and mapped
into virtual space nor the result of an imitative scaffolding
portraying a desired object. They might be considered dynamic
glitches that take on a life of their own - neither real nor
virtual life, but something else - somatic ghosting, where the
original is either non-existent, but "broken" in the virtual
world.

What are the characteristis of somatic ghosting?
1. May be digital or analog; if the latter, see 19th-20th cent.
mediums - the 'ghost' neither here nor there. If the former, there
are different forms of representation:
a. The digital simply presenting an image of a body, section of body,
'slice' of body;
b. The deliberately modulated digital image - the body-image is 
inextricably entwined between digital and analog (access grid);
c. The deliberately transformed digital image - think of the change
in a single pixel - immediately, the classical truth tables, 
verification procedures, etc., are thrown out the window;
d. The image transformed into a false representation - presaged by
the work of Grey Barker;
e. Metaphorically, think of somatic ghosting as 'dirty' - categories
of abjection / sleazy / tawdry etc. - diffuse boundaries, epistemes,
murkiness, looming, etc. - uncanny valleys -
f. What constitutes a false representation on the level of closures
of representations as originals?

And I think that such virtual ghosting is characteristic of our
era, related to fake news, rumors on- and off-line, uncanny
valleys of avatars, constructed and diffuse sexualities, and so
forth - that are both projections (through media or intimacy) and
introjections (through the imaginary and internal phenomenology
of the body) - in other words, an ontological stew which is
incapable of being unraveled, in relation to either being thought
or the truth.

The access grid is another, unconcrete example, what is projected
- what circles the planet - the sheaves of images from the
original which is always on the move, never stable, the trail
theoretically infinite, incandescent, disappearing into noise,
into the trails of noise - voice following suit - the 'totality'
on the move. So somatic, the body clearly _the_ body in movement,
reading through and into a problematic diegesis of sheaves,
all sorts of processes of identification at work here - but
they're not of the digital, they're of the analog - the digital as
carrier, as limiter, as raster. The asteroids as well - the
hardened positioning of interiors, singularities, thrown off -
carapaces, -- the introjection / projection of images -

Where is the news, facticity, in all of this? All that occur are
ill-defined fuzzy sheaves, interrelated like part-objects,
memories - a form of slow-motion splatter semiotics - (slow enough
and you're back into the classical 'tradition of the object') -

One can see that ontology disappears, not into images or fabrics
or categories, but into the 'buzzing confusion of the world' -
these images from the plane - these digital images - the
inconceivably complex forces of weathers, turbulence, momentary
stases, the camera capturing - nothing - now we're on more or less
unstable ground, inadequate ground, inadequate grounding (whatever
the form or format) - stay here - perhaps show 4320 ??

parasites occupying mid-positions where there are no longer vectors,

Beginning the work with the Access Grid, a minimum 3-computer 
multi-audio/video/location large-scale Internet-2 conference 
application - this was over a decade ago. So we were able to 
bounce signals around the world, picking the path; here are two 
experiments - presented again - examples of somatic ghosting -

what is carried by the digital are problematic and uncanny 
emanations of the body or the space of the body - the ghosting

the gendering is a problem of course, but the thinking of earth, 
what i consider emanant, emanation or effluvia, avatar imaginary 
or dissipating rootedness, relates well to the body immersed 
within the access grid, or rather the imagine/imaginary of the 
body traversing the access grid, and i, we, they will stop here.

Lots to unpack here.  I'm 
considering image streams that are broken in every direction. There 
are issues of course of phenomenology here - how are things 
enveloped, internalized, etc. I like the idea of things "looming" 
in this sense (the word borrowed from Sandy Baldwin), and even 
"things" needs deconstruction - it's a "sea" of image, temporary 
vortices, chaos, etc.

I'm not sure what a voice of clarity might be in any case - as 
indicated here by the Democrats, there's confusion all the way up 
and down. That's what I wrote about as splatter semiotics - 
high-speed information splatter that appears to have no beginning 
and no end, continuous "tweet-storms" within and without which 
nothing takes, nothing holds. The action, the realpolitik, occurs 
elsewhere, even within the realm of the inchoate.- reply

But in a way this isn't what happens; there's an older politics of 
absolutism, religious in intent if not in nature, and the island is 
a classical, Boolean (i.e. not fuzzy, not intuitionist, etc.) one 
of T/F. I wrote about that logic when I was thinking/about ISIS - 
the absolute from one side (now I'm reading an excellent book on 
Rwanda, a similar state of affairs, I think). So that - here's 
what's interesting maybe - is that the inchoate, the splatter, 
begins a deliberate production (just as beyond the flurry of fake 
news/misinformation/bullying online, etc., there are active agents, 
singularities fanning out) - it's no longer contradictory stories 
at the "highest levels" but a mythos surround those levels - again 
the action, Aktion occurs within enclaves of neoliberalism, what 
Mike Davis wrote about years ago.
