Somatic Ghosting This isn't a standard presentation, not even by my standards: 1. The theme is almost non-existent, something always in the background. There's a need to 'chase it down' - and 'it' is multiple, a conglomerate of micro-biomes - traces left everywhere. 2. There are examples which overlap/underlap - there's a kind of persistence, a residue - the subject matters wanders, just out of reach. (We watched the muskrats at early dawn, late dusk, saw them from a distance, their features indistinct in the near-dark. Their communication seemed based on touch, more than anything else.) It's like that - a theme that crosses digital media, analog worlds, body issues, uncanny imagings within the 'idiotic real' - 3. A theme of bodies always as ghosts, some examples - a. I'm walking down the street, engrossed in my cellphone, I'm staring at it looking down, concentrated, my vision and attention narrowly focused on the screen. b. Trump's splatter semiotics - tweets produced at high-speed, traditional news media unable to keep up - literally at a loss - his broken discourse dominating analysis - as if the media were unaware of the ghost in the room - c. The Suicide piece is one I've discussed before - the appearance of a virtual object that was unexpected. The other piece possesses an object which is an "emanation" - produced by the software itself - of another base object; the emanation is distorted. I think of these as the production of objects, bodies, in space that are neither the result of "real body" production elsewhere and mapped into virtual space nor the result of an imitative scaffolding portraying a desired object. They might be considered dynamic glitches that take on a life of their own - neither real nor virtual life, but something else - somatic ghosting, where the original is either non-existent, but "broken" in the virtual world. What are the characteristis of somatic ghosting? 1. May be digital or analog; if the latter, see 19th-20th cent. mediums - the 'ghost' neither here nor there. If the former, there are different forms of representation: a. The digital simply presenting an image of a body, section of body, 'slice' of body; b. The deliberately modulated digital image - the body-image is inextricably entwined between digital and analog (access grid); c. The deliberately transformed digital image - think of the change in a single pixel - immediately, the classical truth tables, verification procedures, etc., are thrown out the window; d. The image transformed into a false representation - presaged by the work of Grey Barker; e. What constitutes a false representation on the level of closures of representations as originals? And I think that such virtual ghosting is characteristic of our era, related to fake news, rumors on- and off-line, uncanny valleys of avatars, constructed and diffuse sexualities, and so forth - that are both projections (through media or intimacy) and introjections (through the imaginary and internal phenomenology of the body) - in other words, an ontological stew which is incapable of being unraveled, in relation to either being thought or the truth.
